BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - The 2014 edition of the Rodeo Drive Concours celebrated the City of Beverly Hills’ Centennial on Father’s Day, June 15 and featured Maserati as the “Honored Marque”. The Rodeo Drive Committee – in conjunction with the City of Beverly Hills – had selected the theme “100 Years of Horse Power” to honor this milestone with a one day museum quality installation of vehicles illustrating the city’s history.

From the horse-drawn Wells Fargo Wagon to the present, this year’s show featured cars owned by storied celebrity residents and film and TV over the last century. Cars owned by celebrated residents such as Fred Astaire, Jean Harlow, Tom Mix and Howard Hughes were featured as well as vehicles featured in “An American in Paris,” “The Beverly Hillbillies” and HBO’s “Entourage.”

An annual tradition, the event featured a superb combination of rare automobiles and motorcycles highlighting the past, present and future at the crossroads of fashion, design and entertainment.

“Beverly Hills’ past is deeply intertwined with the history of the transportation and the automobile. In 100 years, the streets of this famed city have gone from real horsepower to the possibility of 200 mpg,” said Concours Chairman Bruce Meyer. Prior to the event, Meyer explained “This will be the most highly curated show in the Rodeo Drive Concours’ 21-year history with spectacular examples of cars that have graced the winding tree-lined streets of Beverly Hills over the past century.”

Launching a series of events in celebration of the first 100 years of Maserati, the revered auto manufacturer introduced its GT MC Centennial Edition Model adding to the heritage of horsepower on display. To commemorate its milestone anniversary, Maserati created unique designs of its top performance models GranTurismo MC Centennial Edition and GranTurismo Convertible MC Centennial Edition. These limited production models will offer special exterior paint colors, upgraded interior designs and new wheel finishes.

In an interview prior to the event, Peter Grady, President and CEO of Maserati North America, Inc stated, “Our centennial celebration is just the beginning of what’s to come,” Maserati announced an exciting industrial plan for 2015, following the introduction of the new Alfieri concept.

“We look forward to showcasing the modern Maserati in the context of such a rich heritage of building luxury automobiles that challenge the norm and define ‘The Absolute Opposite of Ordinary’. We are proud to partner with the Rodeo Drive Concours to showcase our product among devoted clients and enthusiasts from the area who enjoy their drive daily,” said Grady. Maserati will continue its anniversary celebration at the The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion this coming August 14-17, 2014 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

This year’s show opened with an appearance by the famed Wells Fargo Wagon. Prior to the Beverly Hills Hotel opening in 1912 and before the City was founded in 1914, J. P. Bruso moved to town in 1909 and operated the Wells Fargo express office out of his grocery store and butcher shop continuing to offer customers quick and reliable express shipments of money, goods, and valuables until 1918. In 1923, bridle paths for horses were added to Rodeo Drive and Sunset Boulevard and operated into the 1950’s.

This year’s Concours also paid tribute to the Beverly Hills Speedway, a 1.25-mile track for auto racing that attracted such racing legends as Jimmy Murphy, Barney Oldfield and Indianapolis 500 winner Gaston Chevrolet. Up to 70,000 spectators could attend races where world speed records were set and broken at the time. It was built in 1919 and operated until 1924 on 275 acres of land that includes the site of today's Beverly Wilshire Hotel just outside the “Golden Triangle.”

Bringing in the horsepower, famed California Chrome, winner of the Kentucky Derby was honored with a special Best of Show award. Trainers Alan Sherman and William Delgado accepted the award on behalf of the champion horse who is currently injured and could not attend.

The Concours is the largest public event held annually in Beverly Hills with a unique mix of guests including car collectors, families and international visitors and residents from Beverly Hills and the Westside. Named “one of the 300 unmissable events in the world” by Frommer’s Travel Guide, the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance continues to be one of Southern California’s top destinations each and every Father’s Day.
